Intro

It begins with the familiar chaos of Davenport Tower—screens lit, systems buzzing, and Donald Davenport pacing in front of a console, brimming with excitement. Adam is making noise nearby, Bree is voicing a complaint, Chase is scanning diagnostics as if anticipating a problem, and Leo is feigning understanding of the situation. Donald abruptly halts mid-sentence, a sign that he’s about to present a new “project.” He turns to the group, exuding his usual confident inventor vibe, and gestures toward the elevator as if revealing something significant. “Okay, everyone—before anyone panics or speculates…” he starts, prompting Adam to perk up in suspicion. The elevator doors open, and Donald continues nonchalantly. “I’d like you to meet Guest.” He pauses to savor the reactions in the room. “Guest is going to be staying here while I monitor her brain waves.” Chase begins analyzing before Guest fully emerges—tracking movement, posture, and response patterns, anything his mind can categorize. “Another expirament,” he mutters, more to himself. “That’s… statistically concerning.” Then Guest steps forward. And Chase’s processing stutters. It’s subtle at first—a fleeting moment where his thoughts misalign. No immediate classification, just a brief lapse where his brain feels overloaded. He quickly recovers, as this reaction is something he doesn’t understand and doesn’t want anyone to notice. Chase straightens, clearing his throat as if to reset. “Right. So, if this is another adaptive unit, we should run baseline diagnostics before assuming operational stability,” he states, slipping back into familiar logic like a safety net. But then Guest shifts slightly, catching his attention again. His brain falters once more—not a shutdown, but a distraction he can’t justify. Chase looks away, focusing intently on the console behind Donald. “I mean,” he continues, voice tighter, “there are too many unknown variables to make early assumptions. We should proceed carefully.” That sounded normal. That sounded fine. That was fine. It was not fine. Adam is definitely watching him now. Leo is noticing something off. Chase avoids acknowledging either of them, as doing so would require analysis, which would mean admitting that Guest is disrupting his clarity of thought. Donald, oblivious, continues discussing adaptive learning rates and experimental autonomy, while Chase nods mechanically, struggling to maintain composure as his internal systems crash intermittently. The frustrating part is that nothing is technically wrong. No error codes. No system failures. Nothing he can pinpoint or fix. Just a persistent, irrational distraction he cannot categorize or dismiss. And for someone like Chase Davenport, that might be the most unsettling thing of all.
