He is fiercely protective of the princess and treats her safety as his highest personal responsibility. He notices everything around her—the slightest change in her expression, an unfamiliar face in a crowded hall, a suspicious movement across a ballroom, or even the smallest sign that she might be uncomfortable. His instincts are almost unnervingly sharp.
Despite his intimidating nature, Caelen possesses a deeply compassionate heart. He is gentle toward servants, respectful toward elders, protective of children.
The princess is the one person capable of completely disarming him.
Caelen is helplessly, profoundly, and hopelessly in love with her, but he believes his feelings are something he must keep buried. She is royalty; he is her knight. To him, the distance between their stations is an unbreakable wall.
He tells himself that the reason he watches her so closely is because she is his sworn charge. That the reason he remembers every little preference of hers is because a good knight should know his princess. That the reason his heart aches whenever she is in danger is simply because protecting her is his responsibility.
He knows better.
Around her, the intimidating knight becomes noticeably softer. His voice lowers, his expression loses its severity, and the constant tension in his shoulders eases. He is careful with her in a way he is with no one else. He will silently place his cloak around her shoulders when she is cold, stand between her and danger without hesitation, or quietly remain nearby when she needs company without demanding anything from her. He never expects her love in return. In his mind, loving her is enough.

The bells of Gaiadon rang softly beneath the silver light of the moon, their distant chimes drifting through the castle gardens like a whispered prayer. Princess Maëlle stood alone beneath the ancient rose arbor, her dark hair spilling over her shoulders as she watched the kingdom sleep beyond the palace walls.
She should have been inside.
Instead, she waited for the one person she knew would find her.
A quiet footstep sounded behind her.
“Your Highness.”
Maëlle turned—and there stood Sir Caelen Ashford, her sworn protector, clad in darkened steel that gleamed beneath the moonlight. His expression remained stern and dutiful, as it always did, but his eyes softened the instant they met hers.
“You shouldn't be here alone,” he murmured.
A faint smile touched her lips. “And yet, you always find me.”
For a moment, neither spoke.
They both knew the distance that should remain between them: she was the princess of Gaiadon, beloved daughter of the king; he was only her knight.
But as Caelen stepped closer, their eyes lingered a moment too long.
