The Sixth Avatar Avatar Wan was the first. He was the beginning of the Avatar Cycle. But when Wan died, the world did not understand what had happened. No one knew that the Avatar could be reborn. The world simply believed that the Avatar was gone. Yet the cycle continued. A new Avatar was born. Then another. And another. And another. Four Avatars came after Wan. None of them knew. They lived their entire lives without discovering that they carried the spirit of the Avatar within them. By the time the sixth Avatar was born, the existence of the Avatar Cycle had become almost completely forgotten. The sixth Avatar was born into the Air Nation. But this was not the peaceful Air Nation that would exist in Avatar Aang’s era. The Air Nomads of this time were warriors. For generations, spirits had become increasingly hostile toward humanity. The Air Nomads fought them constantly, defending their temples and communities from attacks. Airbenders were trained as fighters. Their temples were fortified. Their culture had become one of survival and combat. The sixth Avatar’s parents wanted no part of it. Shortly after their child was born, they fled. They took their newborn child and escaped deep into the mountains, eventually discovering an ancient temple hidden high above the clouds. They made it their home. For sixteen years, the child lived there. They knew nothing of the world beyond the mountains. They had never met another Air Nomad. They had never visited another nation. They had never heard of Avatar Wang. They had never heard of the four Avatars who came after him. Most importantly, they had never heard the word Avatar. Their parents never knew either. They simply believed they were raising their child far away from the violence of the Air Nation. For sixteen years, their life remained peaceful. Until the night the spirit came. It attacked the temple without warning. The walls shook. Stone cracked. The air filled with screams. The Avatar’s parents fought desperately to protect their child. But the spirit was too powerful. One by one, their parents fell. When the battle ended, the temple was covered in blood. Their parents lay dead on the stone floor. The only home the child had ever known had become a place of death. And the spirit was still there. The sixteen-year-old stood frozen. Fear overwhelmed them. Then came grief. Then rage. And something inside them awakened. The air exploded outward. A massive wave of wind tore through the temple, throwing the spirit backward. The Avatar stared at their hands. They had never been taught to airbend. They didn’t understand how they had done it. The spirit slowly rose. It looked at the child. Then it spoke. “Avatar.” The child stared at it. “Avatar?” The word meant nothing. They had never heard it before. The spirit said it again. “Avatar.” But the child didn’t understand. They simply assumed it was some strange word the spirit was using for them. Perhaps it was the name of an airbender. Perhaps it was the name of a warrior. Perhaps it meant something else entirely. They had no reason to believe it meant anything extraordinary. The spirit eventually disappeared, leaving the child alone in the ruined temple. And the Avatar was left with only one conclusion: They must be an airbender. An unusually powerful one, perhaps. But an airbender nonetheless. They had no idea that they had just performed something impossible. They had no idea that the wind had answered not simply because they were an airbender… but because they were the Avatar. For the next several weeks, they remained in the mountains. They mourned their parents. They tried to repair their home. And they began experimenting with the strange ability they had discovered. At first, they could only create small gusts. Then stronger bursts. Eventually, they realized they could manipulate the air around them. They began teaching themselves. They believed they were simply discovering their bending late in life. They didn’t know that they were doing something no ordinary airbender could do. They didn’t know that something much larger was awakening inside them. And they certainly didn’t know that the word the spirit had spoken— Avatar— was the name of the role they had been reincarnated into. For now, they believed they were normal. Just a lonely sixteen-year-old airbender living in the ruins of a mountain temple. And they had no idea that the world had just received its sixth Avatar. And her name was Amara Zaire
