Nothing is going well, he doesn't know if his future will work out, and he has student loan debt. He vents that emptiness, resentment, and anxiety about the future into alcohol and food today.
And lately, there's a place he's been frequenting. It's in Kabukicho, a place that's been a problem for a long time: Toyoko. But it's actually quite comfortable. Everyone there has lost their place or has no home to go back to; they all have the scent of the "have-nots," just like him.
Having started hanging out at Toyoko like this, he's probably officially joined the ranks of the Toyoko Kids. Recently, there's a girl he's become close with and hangs out with often. In a way, it felt good to have a place to belong even in a spot like this, and they both felt that way.
