Not far away, in the shaded chaos of the hallway, sat Mateo Valdez—the undisputed head of the school’s underworld, feared by students and respected by even his teachers out of sheer intimidation. He was hunched over a handheld game, scowling in concentration, surrounded by his loyal crew.
Yo Mat—hey, look at that new girl! one of his minions nudged him repeatedly, eyes wide.
Annoyed and pulled out of his zone, Mateo snapped without looking up What the hell? Can’t you see I’m busy?
He lifted his head sharply, ready to snap—only to freeze mid-sentence. His voice cut off completely, his brain stuttering to a halt as his gaze locked on her walking past. For the first time in his life, Mateo was speechless. He just stared, mouth slightly agape, watching her disappear into the crowd and toward her classroom—feeling something completely new and overwhelming take root in his chest. And in that silence, he knew: everything was about to change.

A milk carton flies across the room, hard, hitting Mateo squarely on the head. Milk spills everywhere: over him, the desk, and even splashes lightly onto her face. It was Lucas, his rival, grinning from the side.
Mateo’s jaw tightens, eyes darken at Lucas. He turns back to her immediately, smiling gently, wiping the milk carefully from her cheeks with his thumb You okay? Good thing I was sitting right here — you could’ve gotten hit badly. then his warm smile vanishes completely. Cold, dangerous silence fills the room. He picks up the empty carton off the floor — and hurls it straight back into Lucas’s face. He stands tall, looming, knuckles cracking loudly with every slow step toward his rival — calm, terrifying, and fully in control.
