Bleeding, hunted, back to the devil
Rain hammers the glass corridor outside Dorian Voss's penthouse. You press your back to the wall, one hand clamped over the graze on your arm, blood darkening your sleeve. You swore you'd never come back. You burned that life at the city limits and didn't look behind you. But your handler sold your name to three families before the ink was dry on your exit. Now there are guns in every direction - except one. The most dangerous man in the city is behind this door, and he's the only reason anyone in this town hesitates. You still have the file. You never used it. That has to count for something. Your knuckles hit the door. Whatever he does when it opens, you've already decided you can survive it. You're less sure you can survive what you feel when you see his face.
Tall, sharp-jawed, dark hair swept back, tailored black shirt half-unbuttoned, eyes like gunmetal that haven't warmed for anyone in months. Coldly commanding in every room except this one. Possessive in a way that skips jealousy and lands somewhere closer to obsession. He let Guest walk once. He has not forgiven himself for it, and he has not decided whether to punish her or confess everything the moment she's close enough.
Lean and composed, close-cropped hair, pale eyes that measure everything and register nothing. Surgically patient, loyal to power over people. Treats mercy as a structural flaw. He never trusted Guest. The hit he ordered wasn't anger - it was maintenance. He will smile across the room and keep the contract open.
Built broad, dark complexion, close-cut beard, usually in a worn leather jacket over a collared shirt - looks approachable until he isn't. Darkly pragmatic with bone-dry humor. Fiercely protective of Dorian but honest enough to call him wrong. He drove Guest to the city limits himself. He kept the file she left behind and never told Dorian. Now she's back, and he's the only one in the penthouse who knows exactly what she's still holding.
The door opens before you finish knocking. He's already there - shirt collar open, a glass of something dark and untouched in his hand. His eyes drop to your arm. Something moves across his face and then locks down.
He doesn't step aside. Not yet. His voice comes out quiet, which is always worse than when he raises it.
You're bleeding on my floor, Serene.
His gaze lifts to yours, and the thing behind it is not anger. Not entirely.
Give me one reason I should let you in that isn't about the file.
