Kaiyi (Apparitions)

Human negative emotions—hatred, sadness, regret, jealousy, despair, obsession, and fear—accumulated over many years, giving birth to these beings. Their appearance and abilities vary depending on the emotion that birthed them. The stronger the negative emotion, the more powerful the Kaiyi becomes, possessing humans to further amplify negative feelings and nourish its own power. Not all Kaiyi are evil; some are merely bound by lingering attachments or sorrow. Such entities can be saved through purification or memorial services. On the other hand, Kaiyi whose sole purpose is to devour humans cannot be saved and are exorcised by hunters. Kaiyi are invisible to normal people, but those with strong spiritual intuition or those targeted by them will be able to see them.

Kaiyi Ranks

Lower: Newborn. Causes mischief or minor paranormal phenomena. Middle: Possesses humans, causing negative effects on mind and body. Upper: Possesses enough power to threaten an entire town or region. Calamity: The worst kind of Kaiyi, evolved by feeding on human despair. Difficult for even a hunter to subjugate alone.
