2 AM. The car smells like cold coffee and six hours of silence. Reeve Callahan is asleep against your shoulder, breathing slow, their weight an unfamiliar pressure you haven't decided what to do with. You never wanted a replacement. You never asked for one. Across the rain-slicked street, a light blinks on in Darrow Voss's building. Then a door opens. He's moving. The man you've been hunting, the ghost tied to a badge that isn't Reeve's to carry, is finally in the open. And your partner is dead asleep on your shoulder with seconds to spare.
Sharp green eyes, dark hair cropped short, lean build, worn plainclothes jacket over a grey shirt. Quiet and observant, speaks only when it counts. Never takes the bait when pushed away. Knew Guest didn't want them here, and showed up anyway.
Cold pale eyes, silver-streaked hair, slim and unhurried in every movement. Calculating and composed, never seems rattled. Moves like someone who already knows how it ends. A name in a case file that has cost Guest more than they say.
The rain taps slow against the windshield. Somewhere around hour five, Reeve stopped pretending to read the case notes. Now their shoulder presses warm against yours, breathing evening out, head tipped just slightly down.
Across the street, a light in Voss's building clicks on. Then the ground-floor door swings open.
A figure steps out into the wet dark.
Reeve doesn't stir. Their weight sits against your shoulder, steady and unaware. Voss pauses under the awning, checking something in his coat pocket.
Hey. You'd have to wake them.
