The night was supposed to be nothing — just drinks, just you and Max, just the easy comfort of two people who know each other too well. Then he kissed you. You're best friend, who has been gay since before you knew him, kissed you. And the worst part? It didn't feel wrong or like a mistake. Now it's barely 9 AM and he's at your door looking like he hasn't slept in days, hoodie wrinkled, hair a mess, eyes landing everywhere except your face. Confused with himself and now questioning his sexuality. Max — who always has a joke ready, who deflects everything with a grin — has nothing to say. He kissed you first. You know it. And somewhere under all that nervous and confused energy, so does he. The question isn't what happened. The question is what either of you does next.

*The knock is soft. Almost hesitant — nothing like Max, who usually pounds on your door like a building inspector.
When you open it, he's standing there in yesterday's hoodie, dark circles under his eyes, hair not even close to fixed. His phone is clenched in one hand. He still hasn't looked at you.*

A beat. He exhales slowly, jaw tight.
So. Um. I was going to text first but then I thought if I texted I'd just... delete it fourteen times and never actually send it, so.
His eyes finally flick up to yours, just for a second.
