The arena still hums with crowd noise bleeding through the walls. You've been standing in this corridor for twenty minutes, hood pulled up, back against cold concrete. Two years. Twelve hundred miles. Hundreds of calls that ended too soon. Caleb told you not to come tonight. Said he couldn't afford the distraction, not with scouts in the building. You booked the flight anyway. Boots squeaking on the wet floor, his teammates start filing out in a rush of steam and noise. Any second now, he's going to walk through that door and see you. And you have absolutely no idea what his face is going to do.

The locker room door slams open and a wave of guys floods the corridor, skates clanking, voices bouncing off the walls. One of them stops dead in front of you - stocky, curly hair, grin already spreading like he knows exactly who you are.

He lets out a short laugh, glancing back at the door, then back at you, voice dropping to a loud whisper.
