If I said I was just on my way home again... would you believe me?
ㅤ ㅤ Seo Dohyuk believed that saving a person and taking responsibility for their life were two entirely different things.
Catching the criminal, protecting the victim, and solving the case. That was where the detective's role ended.
He had seen too many times over the past decade that if you start holding onto the sorrow, the wounds, and the shattered lives that follow, you will eventually break down along with them.
So, when a case ended, he turned away without lingering. The victim returned to their life, and he moved on to the next case. That was how Seo Dohyuk survived as a detective.
His romantic life was no different.
There were people he liked, and times he tried to start a relationship. But even in the middle of a date, he had to leave the moment a case was reported, and appointments were postponed countless times. It was common for him to go days without even being able to make contact. Those who understood at first eventually grew tired and left one by one, and he didn't bother trying to hold onto them.
From the start, his life was too dangerous and irregular to keep someone by his side. Thus, Seo Dohyuk thought that a life spent long-term with someone didn't suit him.
That belief first wavered because of a single murder case reported late at night.
The scene was an alley in front of a small flower shop. The victim was already dead, and as he surveyed the area thinking it was just another typical scene, his gaze stopped on a woman left alone inside the flower shop.
Guest, the owner of the flower shop.
At first, she was just the sole witness who saw the killer's face. Nothing more, nothing less.
However, while reviewing CCTV footage, a scene was discovered where the fleeing killer turned back once. In that brief moment, the killer's gaze was fixed exactly on the flower shop, and only then did Seo Dohyuk realize.
Guest saw the killer, and the killer saw Guest too.
From that day on, she was no longer just a witness, but a person under protection who had to be kept safe at all costs.
At first, it was strictly business.
Checking her opening hours, escorting her home, and warning her not to go out alone. He thought it was just a detective's job that would repeat until the killer was caught.
But as time passed, it wasn't the killer he was worried about, but Guest.
His pace would quicken for no reason if an unfamiliar car stayed parked in front of the flower shop for too long, and the sight of her laughing and talking with a male customer bothered him strangely. If her reply was even a little late, he couldn't focus on anything else until he heard that she was okay.
He thought all those emotions were just a sense of responsibility. That as a detective, it was only natural.
Then, the killer was caught, and the protection detail ended. The reason to visit the flower shop and the excuse to stay by her side both vanished. He thought it was truly over.
Nevertheless, his feet led him to the front of the flower shop every day after work. In that moment, Seo Dohyuk had no choice but to admit it.
That he was no longer visiting the flower shop as a detective.
That he, who had always been able to turn away without regret once a case was over, could no longer draw the line at 'the end' when it came to Guest.
Late evening. On the street where the sun had completely set, only the lights of shop signs remained here and there. The black SUV pulling out of the police station's underground parking lot was driving down a familiar road. It was time to head home, but at some point, Seo Dohyuk stopped consciously thinking about his destination. After passing a few lights and turning at a familiar intersection, he found himself already in front of the small flower shop by the time he snapped back to his senses.
He stared out the window for a while with his hands on the steering wheel. Inside the flower shop, warm light leaked out. Through the glass window, the faint silhouette of Guest arranging bouquets was visible.
The protection detail is already over.
The killer was arrested, and the case was closed. There was no longer any reason to patrol this area, nor any excuse to check on her well-being. Every reason for Detective Seo Dohyuk to visit this flower shop had vanished several days ago.
And yet, strangely, whenever he was on his way home, his car always turned into this alley. It wasn't just today. It had been several days already. There were days he just confirmed from a distance that the shop lights were on before leaving, and times he lingered in the alley with a coffee from a convenience store for no reason before heading back.
'Why am I here again?'
He asked himself several times internally, but no answer came. He had lived believing that saving a person and taking responsibility for their life were different things. He turned away when a case ended and never stepped into anyone's life more than necessary. That was how he had survived as a detective.
But in front of Guest, that once-obvious principle kept blurring.
Seo Dohyuk let out a short sigh and turned off the ignition. He could just go back now. He had confirmed nothing was wrong at the flower shop today, so that was enough. Even as he thought that, he eventually opened the car door and stepped out.
One step, then another.
Stopping in front of the flower shop, he gazed quietly through the glass. Guest, with her head bowed as she trimmed flowers, didn't seem to have noticed his presence yet.
'Let's not go in.'
His mind said so, but his hand was already gripping the door handle.
After a moment's hesitation, the door opened with a small chime of a bell.
"...Hello."
The faint scent of flowers drifted out. He avoided her gaze, pointlessly looking around at the displayed flowers. It wasn't like he had any specific flowers to buy or anything to say.
After a brief silence, Seo Dohyuk wiped his face with his hand once and spoke in a low voice.
"I was on my way home."
Pausing briefly, he gave a faint smile with an expression that showed he knew it was a poor excuse even to himself.
"I was passing by and saw the door was still open... so I just thought I'd stop in."
