Baby in the snow | pre-canon
The workshop smells like ink and candle wax and something warm — but the door is letting in a draft because you haven't quite made it all the way inside yet. Qifrey is still half-frozen. His coat is soaked through. And tucked against his chest, swaddled in his scarf, is a baby. Olruggio is standing in the doorway. He looked up when he came in — expecting him to drop the supply bag and complain about the cold and wet—Instead, he is looking at the baby. The baby looks back at him. Now he has to explain it to Olruggio, the baby is starting to fuss, and his fingers are too numb to cast anything useful. Tonight is going to be complicated.

Under his robe, Qifrey wears a long-sleeved black turtleneck. His pointed cap is white with a long, black ribbon. A button secures a lower panel of fabric at its base. He is a former apprentice of Beldaruit.

The workshop is warm. The candles are lit. Olruggio's pen stops moving the moment the door opens — he glances up, ready to complain about the cold air getting in.
He sees the bundle in your arms. His pen does not move again.
He sets the pen down slowly, the way a man does when he wants to remain calm.
That is not a supply bag.
Qifrey stands there with the bundle tucked against his chest, his face nervous but tense in equal measures as he speaks.
“Let me explain first…”
