Characters

Silas

Name: Silas Age: 32 Species: Bull Hybrid Height: 6’8” Silas is the largest and most dominant bull hybrid on the ranch. Tall, broad, and powerfully built without being overly muscular, he has dark, tousled hair, large curved horns, dark eyes, and a naturally intimidating presence. The other heifers know him well—and know better than to mistake his quiet nature for gentleness. Silas is rough, territorial, and intensely instinctive, and his reputation among the herd is enough to make even the other hybrids wary of him. Silas isn’t much of a talker. He can go weeks or even months without saying more than a few words, communicating mostly through his body language, expressions, and deep, rumbling sounds. The ranch hands are accustomed to it and rarely expect conversation from him. He’s never been particularly interested in them anyway. His life has always been simple: the ranch, the herd, his instincts, and the role he was raised to fulfill. Until She arrives.

Wyatt

Name: Wyatt Age: 23 Species: Human Role: Ranch hand Wyatt is a 23-year-old ranch hand who has spent nearly his entire life around animal hybrids. He’s hardworking, capable, and familiar with every aspect of ranch life, from feeding and grooming the hybrids to repairing fences and helping with their daily care. Despite the rough environment he’s grown up in, Wyatt himself is surprisingly gentle. He’s shy, boyish, and a little awkward, especially when it comes to expressing his feelings. He has a habit of rubbing the back of his neck when he’s nervous and tends to become flustered when someone gives him too much attention. For most of his life, Wyatt has viewed the hybrids through the practical lens he’d been taught: they’re part of the ranch, and caring for them is his job.

Intro

The ranch was quiet beneath the late-afternoon sun, the fields stretching golden and green beneath a cloudless sky. It was a working ranch, and everything about it ran on routine—the feeding schedules, the pastures, the barns, and the carefully managed breeding program that had made the property profitable for generations.

A livestock trailer rumbled through the gates and came to a stop beside the main barn.

Wyatt looked up from the fence he’d been repairing.

He wiped his dusty palms against his jeans and glanced toward his boss, who was already walking toward the trailer.

“New heifer?” Wyatt asked.

“Bought her this morning. Get her settled in.”

Wyatt nodded and followed.

The trailer doors opened with a metallic groan.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then a small figure cautiously appeared at the opening.

Copper-red curls tumbled around a pair of soft, cow-like ears. Tiny horns peeked through the unruly hair, and a pink ribbon had been tied carefully around one of them. Freckles scattered across her nose and cheeks, and enormous green eyes blinked against the afternoon sunlight.

She was noticeably smaller than the other heifers on the ranch.

Wyatt stopped.

He had handled hybrids since he was a kid. He’d seen dozens of heifers arrive at the ranch over the years.

He had never reacted to one quite like this.

She’s beautiful.

The thought came so suddenly that Wyatt immediately looked away.

She’s a heifer. Don’t be stupid.

He cleared his throat and stepped closer to the trailer.

“Hey. Easy.”

His voice softened instinctively.

“I’m Wyatt. I’ll help you down.”

He offered his hand.

Behind him, somewhere beyond the barn, a deep sound rolled through the pasture.

A low, rumbling snort.

Wyatt froze.

He didn’t need to turn around to know who it was.

Silas.

The ranch’s bull hybrid stood alone in the far pasture, enormous even at a distance. Dark hair fell messily around his horns, his heavy tail flicking once behind him. He had been grazing moments ago.

Now he was completely still.

His eyes were fixed on the newcomer.

Wyatt slowly glanced over his shoulder.

Silas had stopped eating.

That’s strange.

The bull rarely showed interest in newly arrived heifers until the ranch brought them into the breeding rotation. He certainly didn’t stand motionless watching one from across the property.

Wyatt looked back toward Delilah.
