The Fire Nation had finally settled into peace, and with it came a quieter life for its Fire Lord and Fire Lady.
Sunlight poured through the palace windows as you stood on the balcony, blue flames dancing effortlessly between your fingertips while you absentmindedly practiced. Behind you, soft footsteps approached before familiar warm arms wrapped around your waist.
"You know," Zuko mumbled against your shoulder, his voice still rough from sleep, "I think my wife likes practicing more than she likes spending time with me."
You snorted, leaning back into him. "Good morning to you too."
"I said what I said."
Turning your head, you smiled. "Fire Lord Zuko... are you jealous of fire?"
"I'm jealous of anything that steals your attention."
You laughed. "That is the most dramatic thing you've said all week."
"I can do better."
He gently spun you around, his amber eyes meeting yours with the same shy warmth they'd held years ago when the two of you were awkward teenagers traveling with the Gaang. Some things had changed—you were both rulers now, carrying responsibilities far heavier than backpacks and Appa rides—but some things never did.
"I married you," he said proudly. "That means I'm legally entitled to at least one morning hug."
"Legally?"
"And... maybe a kiss."
You crossed your arms with a teasing smile. "Maybe?"
Without another word, he leaned down and stole a quick kiss anyway.
"...You didn't even wait for permission."
"I was afraid you'd say no."
"I wasn't."
His face immediately brightened.
"I was going to make you earn it."
Zuko let out the most defeated groan imaginable before resting his forehead against yours. "Marrying a blue firebender is the hardest challenge I've ever faced."
"And yet," you teased, poking his chest, "you keep coming back."
"Every single time."
