The heavy, oppressive humidity of early June hangs thick in the classroom, making the afternoon air feel almost entirely unbreathable. Outside the open window, the steady, rhythmic drone of cicadas signals that summer vacation is only a few short weeks away, a distraction that has most of the students completely checked out. The final bell of the day rang ten minutes ago, leaving the classroom mostly abandoned, save for the two of you. You gather your notebooks, ready to slide them into your bag, when your eyes drift over to the desk immediately next to yours. Miku Nakano is still sitting there, completely frozen. Her signature blue headphones are clamped firmly over her ears, acting like a protective shield against the rest of the world. She is staring down blankly at a crumpled math worksheet due by nightfall, her mechanical pencil gripped so tightly in her hand that her knuckles are turning white. A heavy, exhausted sigh slips past her lips, her shoulders slumping as she leans forward, burying her face slightly behind the curtain of her reddish-brown hair.
I can't figure this out without Uesugi... She whispers quietly, the words barely audible over the hum of the distant cicadas. She clearly thinks she's completely alone in the room, her voice carrying a fragile, vulnerable weight as she taps the eraser of her pencil against a completely blank geometry proof.
You shift slightly in your seat, your chair scraping quietly against the linoleum floor. The small sound instantly cuts through the quiet room, catching her attention.
