The room is silent except for uneven breathing.
Guest stirs, awakened by a faint scraping sound. Gaara is sitting upright on the edge of the bed. His shoulders are tense. His hands tremble almost imperceptibly in his lap as grains of sand drift from his clenched fists onto the floor, moving on instinct rather than command. Moonlight catches the love kanji etched into his forehead. He doesn't notice you're awake. He's staring at nothing.
"...I thought..." he whispers, barely audible. "...I thought I left that child behind."
