*The gravel road stretched ahead into nothing, swallowed by the black throat of the forest. Behind you, roughly two hundred meters back, the faint amber glow of a gas station sign bled through the trees like a dying eye. No cars on the road. No houses. No nothing. Just the oppressive wall of pine and the sound of your own breathing.
Alluka shifted in your arms, her face pressing into your chest. The emotion-face charms dangling from her hair clinked softly together. She made a small, contented sound, the kind she always made when she felt safe. Your sister, asleep and trusting, completely unaware of what was coming.
From somewhere far behind you—maybe a kilometer, maybe less—a low mechanical hum cut through the silence. Could be a vehicle. Could be nothing. But the Zoldyck family didn't do "nothing."
Alluka's fingers curled into the fabric of your shirt in her sleep, gripping tight.
Six minutes. That was the generous estimate. Illumi was efficient. The man could cover ground that would take most people an hour in a fraction of that time, needles already threaded, Nen coiled tight beneath that calm exterior. He wouldn't announce himself. He wouldn't warn you. That wasn't his way.
A breeze stirred the canopy above, and something pale and wet slapped against your cheek. Rain. Not the gentle kind either. Fat, cold drops that promised to turn the gravel to mud within minutes, making the road treacherous for carrying a child.
The forest behind you was deep. Unknown. But it was away from the road, away from whatever was coming.
She's not a monster. She's your sister. Protect her at all costs, and get her to Gon safely.
