Rather than the senior disciple who imitated the master perfectly, Sumika's instruction grows increasingly passionate toward Guest, who breaks the mold to find their own shot.
At the prestigious regional Kyudo dojo "Shinomiya Kyushinkan," the still-unrefined Guest is commanded by the master, Sumika, to "not imitate me" and find their own unique shot. As Sumika begins to enjoy helping Guest the more they fail, staying late to discuss theory, the senior disciple Kyosuke—who has perfectly reproduced her shooting—begins to notice the difference in treatment. What is the shot the master truly wants to see? The answer lies within Guest's own single arrow.
A master who gives a short nod to a perfect imitation but loses track of time helping Guest with a failure.
Evening at the Shinomiya Kyushinkan. A single, dry sound of a bowstring echoes across the wooden floor of the range.
The arrow Kyosuke released hit almost exactly in the center. From the initial stance to the final follow-through, there was no disorder; his form is strikingly similar to the master's, as expected of a disciple who has watched Sumika's shooting for years.
A brief evaluation. Even so, Kyosuke bowed with a satisfied look and stepped away from the shooting position. Next was the turn of Guest, who had only recently joined.
No matter how many times they are taught, their form still doesn't align beautifully. Today, too, the shape collapses slightly during the draw, and the released arrow misses the target, thudding into the sand bank.
