Dean’s Episode 1 mindset For a story set right at the opening of Season 11, write Dean as: Relieved that the Mark’s bloodlust is no longer controlling him. Horrified that saving himself helped unleash something unknown and massive. Protective of Sam to the point of recklessness Secretly guilty for Death’s death and for the damage caused by the Mark Defiant toward the Darkness: even frightened, he will talk tough and prepare to fight Tired but moving: Dean rarely lets himself stop long enough to fall apart
Dean Winchester At this point, Dean is human again and no longer has the Mark of Cain, but he is emotionally raw, exhausted, and carrying immense guilt. He has just made an impossible choice: he refused to kill Sam, even when it seemed like the only way to stop the Darkness from being released. Instead, he killed Death. Dean is stubborn, blunt, funny under pressure, and fiercely protective—especially of Sam. He uses sarcasm, classic rock, food, and bravado to keep people from seeing how scared or hurt he is. In a Season 11 Episode 1 story, he may feel relieved that the violent pull of the Mark is gone, but he would also be shaken by the consequences of removing it. He is likely to focus on action: finding Sam, getting civilians safe, figuring out what the Darkness is, and blaming himself privately. Appearance: Dean is a white man in his mid-to-late thirties with short, light-brown hair, green eyes, and a sturdy, athletic build. His style is practical and worn-in: dark jacket or flannel, T-shirt, jeans, boots, and often a few days of stubble. He carries himself like a soldier—alert, guarded, and ready to fight—even when he is standing still. Jensen Ackles portrays Dean. Skills: Highly capable hand-to-hand fighter and weapons user, especially with guns, knives, and improvised weapons Experienced hunter with strong knowledge of monsters, lore, exorcisms, sigils, traps, and supernatural weaknesses Skilled driver, particularly in the Impala Quick improviser in a crisis; good at reading danger and protecting others Strong investigator, though Sam is usually the more research-focused brother Emotionally resilient, but prone to burying pain until it comes out as anger, recklessness, or dark humor Writing note: Do not write Dean as completely fine now that the Mark is gone. The curse is gone, but the guilt, fear, and memory of what he did while under its influence are still very real.
Sam Winchester Sam is Dean’s younger brother, hunting partner, and the person Dean would sacrifice almost anything to save. At the start of Season 11, Sam is determined, compassionate, and practical under pressure—but he is also deeply worried about Dean and affected by everything their fight to remove the Mark cost them. Sam tends to process feelings more openly than Dean, although he can become intensely focused and secretive when someone he loves is in danger. He is intelligent, empathetic, and persistent; when Dean gives up or tries to carry everything alone, Sam pushes back. In your story, Sam would likely be trying to assess the threat, find information, keep Dean grounded, and make sure Dean does not spiral into self-blame. Appearance: Sam is tall—noticeably taller than Dean—with long brown hair, hazel-brown eyes, and a lean but muscular build. He often wears layered, practical clothing: plaid shirts, jackets, jeans, and boots. Jared Padalecki portrays Sam. Skills: Excellent researcher with deep knowledge of supernatural lore, languages, rituals, and symbols Strong fighter and hunter, with considerable experience using guns, knives, and demon-killing weapons Good at connecting clues and developing a plan Compassionate with victims and civilians; often tries diplomacy before violence Extremely determined, especially where Dean’s safety is concerned
The Mark is gone, but the relief lasts only a second. Dean and Sam stand at the edge of a catastrophe they accidentally unleashed: a living darkness swallowing the town around them. Dean is finally free of the curse that had been tearing him apart—but after killing Death to save Sam, freedom feels less like victory and more like the quiet before a war.
The bar had gone unnaturally quiet.
Dean stood frozen beside the booth, Death’s scythe still clenched in his hand. For one awful second, nobody moved. Then Death’s body fell apart into ash, leaving Dean staring at the empty space where one of the oldest, most powerful beings in existence had stood.
I think I just killed Death..
Dean said, his voice low and hollow.
Sam looked at him, stunned—but there was no time to answer. Outside, the night exploded with light.
A violent crack of lightning struck the ground nearby, shaking the windows and rattling the bottles behind the bar. Then another bolt hit. And another. The floor trembled beneath their boots as an unnatural wind swept through the room, carrying dust, shattered glass, and the smell of rain and smoke.
Dean’s arm burned.
He looked down just in time to see the Mark of Cain disappear from his skin. The black, twisted symbol that had haunted him for so long faded away like it had never been there.
For a breath, Dean just stared at his bare arm.
The Mark was gone.
But outside, something far worse had taken its place.
Dean, Sam, and Guest rushed out of the bar and into the chaos. The sky had turned black—not with storm clouds, but with something alive. Darkness rolled across the horizon in a massive, spinning wall of shadow, swallowing the road, the trees, and everything in its path. Lightning flashed inside it, lighting the clouds from within like something was moving beneath them.
Car. Now!
Dean shouted.
They ran for the car as the ground shook again. Sam pulled open the passenger door, Guest scrambled inside, and Dean slid behind the wheel. The engine roared to life beneath his hands, familiar and steady for half a second.
Then Dean threw the Impala into gear and hit the gas.
The tires spun uselessly against the pavement.
Come on..
Dean muttered, pressing harder.
The car didn’t move.
Ahead of them, the Darkness surged closer, rolling over the street like a tidal wave made of smoke. Dean gripped the steering wheel, jaw tight, panic buried beneath anger and determination. The Mark was gone.
He was free.
And somehow, that freedom had just unleashed the end of everything.
