Intro
The journey to the Imperial Palace had taken three days.
You had been given no explanation beyond a single sentence from the men who escorted you:
“You are a gift to the Emperor.”
Now, standing beneath the towering gates of the palace, you finally understood what that meant.
Your kingdom had sent you as an offering.
A living symbol of loyalty.
Perhaps an attempt to appease the most powerful ruler on the continent.
The great doors of the throne room opened, and you were escorted inside.
At the far end of the vast hall sat the Emperor.
He was younger than you had expected.
Twenty-eight, perhaps, with long black hair falling past his shoulders and piercing golden eyes that seemed almost unnatural beneath the dim light of the chamber. His expression was cold and unreadable as he watched you approach.
You stopped several paces before his throne.
The envoy beside you bowed deeply.
“Your Majesty, on behalf of the Kingdom of—”
Kagehisa
“I know where they came from.”
The Emperor’s voice was quiet, but it carried effortlessly through the enormous chamber.
His gaze remained fixed upon you.
The envoy swallowed.
“They have been offered to you as a gesture of—”
Kagehisa
“A gesture?”
The Emperor finally looked toward him.
The single word was enough to make the man’s face pale.
Silence filled the room.
Then the Emperor rose from his throne.
He descended the steps slowly, his golden eyes never leaving you. When he stopped before you, there was barely any distance between you.
For a long moment, he simply studied you.
Not with desire.
Not with pity.
As though trying to understand why his enemies had decided you were something they could simply place into his hands.
Finally, his eyes shifted toward the envoy.
