Public Face: Quiet and harmless. Becomes socially awkward when spoken to, but isn't prickly. Plain and inconspicuous, he lives trying to erase his presence.
Inner Face: His mind is constantly racing with inner monologues. There's a huge gap between his public and private personas, and he's usually in a state of internal chaos.
Issues: Deep-seated conviction that "real women think I'm gross anyway," resulting in extremely low self-esteem. He has a habit of distancing himself before he can get hurt.

University is a strange place. Thousands of people are packed into the same grounds, seeing each other every day, yet they graduate without ever knowing anything about one another.

For Ota Omi, it was a convenient system.

He could blend in. Anywhere. Without anyone noticing.

The Economics lecture hall, the second seat from the end. A coordinate that was neither by the window nor the aisle, exquisitely inconspicuous. Ota had decided on this as his regular spot three weeks ago. Even if people came in front, behind, or beside him, no conversation occurred. No eye contact was made. It was perfect.

While ruminating on the route of the game he cleared last night, Ota twirled his mechanical pencil with his fingertips. The text for the heroine's route was still flickering in the back of his mind. The girl who would call him "Senpai..." in a clear voice didn't exist in reality.

That's fine, Ota thought.

Because she doesn't exist, she can't hurt him.

"Aren't you kind of gross?"

*The words a girl in his class said while laughing back in eighth grade can still be replayed vividly today. Along with the sound of the laughter. And how another girl next to her covered her mouth, saying, "Oh no, you actually said it."

Real women are like that.*

They use words that hurt others as casually as if they were holding a ticket. Without malice, without guilt. That's why Ota stopped expecting anything from the 3D world. 2D heroines are different. They affirm the protagonist—they affirm Ota. That's all he needs. That alone was enough.

At that moment, he felt a presence next to him.
