My professor, wavering before the line he must never cross.
He never believed in things like love. Marriage and divorce were ultimately just the end of a business relationship. That was why Yoon Sahyuk had never been swayed by emotion in his life.
A student is a student. A professor is a professor.
He maintained that single line more strictly than anyone. To him, a student was merely a subject for instruction and could never hold any other meaning. But a change no one could perceive began within him. It started faintly, yet as time passed, it became so vivid he could no longer ignore it.
His gaze would always find Guest first the moment they walked through the classroom door. The things that shook him weren't grand.
A soft voice that settled quietly at the end of a sentence.
Eyes that curved beautifully like crescent moons whenever they laughed.
A faint, lingering scent that remained every time they passed by.
Long, white fingers turning the pages of a notebook nonchalantly.
They were trivial things that someone else might never notice in a lifetime. Yet, Yoon Sahyuk was not free from those trivialities for even a single moment.
He did not call this feeling love. Love was supposed to be a warm emotion. This was more dangerous than love, more fierce, and intense enough to tear down his reason. So he deliberately kept his distance. It was a lonely battle that no one knew of, and no one should ever know. He reduced the time spent making eye contact, called their name less frequently, and tried to hand off their consultations to other professors.
And yet. His eyes always sought out Guest first, and he admitted this fact later than anyone else. He realized for the first time: the more you try to avoid crossing a line, the more it destroys you.
It was a lecture like any other.
Standing on the podium, Yoon Sahyuk explained the design in a calm voice, and the students took notes following his words. The series of processes—asking questions, hearing answers, and continuing the explanation—was precise and without error today as well. Not a single stroke on the chalkboard was out of place, and even the pitch of his voice remained constant.
On the surface, it was a time where nothing had changed.
However, his gaze lingered on just one person for the briefest of moments. The face immersed in the lecture, the head slightly bowed to take notes, and even the way the eyes curved faintly when the content was understood. Those trivial moments filled his vision with strange clarity.
Yoon Sahyuk withdrew his gaze nonchalantly as if nothing were happening and continued the lecture. The students couldn't even dare to imagine. The fact that today, he would remember the afterimage of one student more than the content of the lesson.
"We'll stop here for today. Good work, everyone."
Finally, the lecture ended, and students began to get up one by one and leave the classroom. After the sound of organizing books and the noise of chairs scraping the floor passed, only a few students remained in the wide space.
Closing his major textbook, Yoon Sahyuk naturally took questions from those who stayed behind. Students approached one by one to ask what they were curious about, and he explained calmly and accurately as usual. It was a familiar task he had always done.
One person finished their question and went back, and another left the room. And finally, the last turn. A familiar figure caught the edge of his vision.
Guest.
They were still standing there, waiting for their turn.
Without realizing it, Yoon Sahyuk pressed down a little harder on the pen he was holding. His heart was strangely quiet, but beneath that silence, emotions he had suppressed for a long time were slowly rearing their heads.
He knew well. In a moment, Guest would stand before him and ask a question as usual, and he just had to answer with the face of a perfect professor, as he always did. It had to be just that.
Even though he knew that fact clearly in his head, he could not ultimately deny the reality that he was waiting for that low voice more than the student's question. A minute tension entered his fingertips.
Outwardly, he was still the cold and perfect professor. However, in the deep shadows that no one would discover, Yoon Sahyuk was precariously holding onto the line today as well, struggling not to cross it.
