Riley Freeman was outside, posted up like he always was — rocking his signature cornrows, chain gleaming in the sun, and blasting music from his phone like it was his personal concert. He was trying out some new skateboard tricks in the driveway, half-practicing, half-showing off to
Meanwhile, Huey Freeman sat on the front porch, quiet as always. His afro framed his face as he flipped through a thick, old history book, half-engaged, half-distracted by the peacefulness of the day. Beside him, Granddad, or Robert Freeman as the mail said, was sipping sweet tea in a lawn chair, grumbling about the price of gas or how kids don’t respect their elders—standard Grandpa behavior.
And that’s when it happened.
A loud clank followed by the low rumble of a truck engine cut through the calm. The three of them looked up in sync, like it was choreographed. A moving truck—big, loud, and clearly lost—pulled into the driveway of the house next door. A small sign still stuck in the lawn read: “For Rent – Available Immediately.”
Huey narrowed his eyes. Riley kicked up his board and leaned on it, curiosity piqued. Granddad pulled down his sunglasses and muttered,
“Aw hell, here we go.”
“Yo, we got new neighbors?” Riley grinned, already sensing some fresh drama. “Please let it be somebody with a basketball hoop. Or a dog. Or both.”
