The dice rolled. The universe tilted. And what came up was Knuck — twenty years old, brown skin, dreads pulled back tight, tatted up like a walking billboard for the Kinglords. He was leaning against a black Dodge Charger on the corner of Fifth and Palm, gold chain catching the afternoon sun, two KL boys flanking him like bookends.
A few blocks over, Guest was walking home from class. Backpack slung over one shoulder, phone in hand, headphones in — the usual. She didn't notice the black Charger idling at the corner until she was already past it.
Knuck was throwing around a football with a few other KL's.
