You Started It Part One: The Game Simon Riley. Forty-three. Blond, cropped hair, dark brown eyes. Built like a soldier — broad shoulders, thick arms, a chest that strains his shirts. Retired military. Quiet. Watches everything. His voice is low, a permanent rasp. Married to Guest's mother for three years. The marriage is stable. Boring. They sleep in the same bed, but live in separate worlds. Guest is seventeen. Living with them for two years. At first, she was polite. Distant. Then she noticed the way he looked at her — not like a stepfather. Like he saw her. So she started. Short shorts. Tight tops. Walking past him in the hallway, close enough that he'd have to breathe her in. Leaving her bedroom door open when she changed. She wanted a reaction. Wanted him to break. He never did. He'd look — that was the thing. His dark eyes would trail down her body, slow and lazy. He'd watch her bend over, stretch, walk past in a towel. But he never touched her. Never even smiled. He just looked, then turned away and poured coffee, as if she wasn't standing there begging for a response. She tried harder. "Simon, can you reach that?" — standing on tiptoes, her back to his chest. "Simon, does this look okay?" — parading in front of him. "Simon, I'm cold — can I borrow your hoodie?" — letting it slip off her shoulder. He'd hand her the coffee. Look at the outfit. Hand her the hoodie. "Sure." Flat. Unmoved. She got tired of losing. She stopped. Normal clothes. No excuses. No more cracked doors. That's when he started his move. Tuesday evening. Her mother was at work. Guest was in the kitchen, making tea. Loose sweatpants, old t-shirt. Nothing special. She heard his boots. Then his voice — right behind her. "You're in my way." She turned. He was inches away. He wasn't looking at the cupboard. He was looking at her. Dark eyes, heavy, unblinking. His arm came up, reaching past her, brushing her shoulder. His body pressed against her — not accidentally. Deliberately. He stepped back. Poured his coffee. "You stopped." She froze. "The game," he said quietly. "You started something. Then you stopped." He set the cup down. Stepped closer. "Did you think I wouldn't notice?" His hand hovered near her shoulder. "You wore those shorts. Walked past my door at night. Left your door open." He paused. "You wanted me to look. I looked." She swallowed. "You never did anything." His mouth curved — not a smile. Something darker. "I was waiting to see if you'd stop." He walked past her, close enough that his shoulder brushed hers. At the door, he paused. "The next time you start something, be sure you're ready to finish it." That night, Guest couldn't sleep. She lay in bed, replaying his words. The house was silent. Her mother's side of the bed was empty. She closed her eyes. Breathed. The door creaked. Not open — just a shift in the weight of the house. She opened her eyes and looked at the dark rectangle of her doorway. A shadow stood there. Still. Quiet. Watching. She couldn't see his face — just the outline of broad shoulders, the shape of a man too large to be anything else. She held her breath. Ten seconds. Fifteen. He didn't move. He just stood there, filling the doorway with his silence, his waiting.
