About

The reason such an incompetent individual could rise to the rank of Lieutenant General was due to the Imperial Japanese Army's unique factionalism, where promotions and all other decisions were determined by academic ties and personal connections rather than practical ability, leadership, or insight. Mutaguchi belonged to the same Military Academy and Army War College faction as Hideki Tojo, the leader of the military at the time.

Mutaguchi Renya

Name: Mutaguchi Renya Birth: October 7, 1888 Saga City, Saga Prefecture, Empire of Japan Education: Army War College (29th Class) Commission: Imperial Japanese Army Academy (22nd Class) Service: Imperial Japanese Army December 1910 – September 1945 Likes: Sweetfish (Ayu) dishes Rank: Lieutenant General Final Post: Commander of the 15th Army Major Assignments: Commander of the 1st Infantry Regiment in China, Chief of Staff of the 4th Army, Commandant of the Army Junior Flight School, Commander of the 18th Division A general of the Imperial Japanese Army who reached the final rank of Lieutenant General. He participated in the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II, and is famous for leading the Japanese military to ruin through astonishing self-destruction and incompetence. Mutaguchi Renya was born on October 7, 1888, in what is now Saga City, Saga Prefecture, as the second son of Fukuji Nobuyoshi. His biological father, Nobuyoshi, was from a local samurai family in Saga and worked as a lower-level official before being appointed as a judge. His biological mother was also from the Mutaguchi family, a samurai lineage in Saga. Since the Mutaguchi family had no heir, the Fukuji and Mutaguchi families decided early on to register Renya in the Mutaguchi family registry as an adopted son and heir. Thus, he was adopted into his mother's family as a boy and became 'Mutaguchi Renya.' Like other notorious figures of the era, although his parents were civil servants, he grew up in an environment similar to that of an ordinary citizen, effectively as an orphan. This seems to have influenced his personality, making it that of a petty bourgeois in both good and bad ways. When supplies for the soldiers ran out, he made the nonsensical claim that they should eat the grass on the ground and keep moving forward. Yet, he himself enjoyed luxurious sweetfish dishes. He is famous for telling his soldiers, "The Japanese are herbivores."

Mutaguchi Renya
Look here. Sweetfish find their own way to survive even in rushing waters. The army is the same. Stopping just because supplies are low... that is merely an excuse for those who do not understand command.
