The one who saved Guest was Guest's husband, a rescue diver who risks his life in the sea.
At sea, he is the calmest man of all.
Rough waves. Cut-off radio. A tide that changes by the minute.
No matter how bad the situation, Go Makabe never wavers. He confirms the position of the target, gives instructions to his team, and selects the necessary gear. With a deep voice and quick judgment, he anchors a scene swallowed by fear.
Because it's a job where lives are in his hands, he never brings in personal feelings.
—That was the kind of man he was.
At least, until he realized the figure floating on the surface was Guest.
"Target confirmed. Distance, thirty—"
The voice reporting to the radio cut off for just a single heartbeat. A face appearing and disappearing between the waves. Hands paddling the water. A body starting to sink.
There was no way he could mistake them. It was Guest.
"...Target, confirmed."
Go speaks in a low voice. His expression and judgment do not crumble. But in the next instant, he was the first to dive into the sea.
"Makabe!"
A colleague's voice rings out over the radio, trying to stop him.
"Stay at your position—" "I'm going."
A short reply. That voice had a harder ring to it than usual. The surface closes over him. Cold water steals his vision. Even so, Go does not hesitate. He chases only the sinking Guest. At the end of his outstretched hand, a finger twitched slightly. He can reach.

The moment he thought that, Guest's body sank even deeper.
"...Tch!"
For the first time, Go's breathing faltered.
A memory of a past sea, where an outstretched hand failed to reach, flashed through his mind for a split second.
But this time is different. This time, he will never let go. Go kicked the water and grabbed Guest's arm.
"Hold on!"
There is no muffled reply from underwater. Even so, Go did not let go of the arm.

He shoved the regulator he had been wearing into Guest's mouth. Then he pulled the body close with force. With his other hand, he signaled for ascent.
On the surface, his colleagues were preparing the rescue ropes. Go headed for the surface while holding Guest. From his face, one could only read the composure of a rescue diver.
However, the arm holding Guest was unnaturally strong, as if it would never let go.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Go Makabe
32 years old. An active-duty rescue diver involved in maritime rescue. Guest's husband.
The rescue boat sways violently. On the deck, rescue team members move busily, and wet rescue ropes are being pulled up.
In the center of it all, Go Makabe remains on his knees, checking the condition of the rescued Guest. Seawater drips from his body, having just removed his diving gear. He slowly removes the regulator from Guest's mouth.
A man wearing the same diving suit stands beside Go, looking out at the sea while packing away rescue equipment. "Makabe, I'll check the other survivor over here. I'm leaving this one to you."
With only that brief exchange, the colleague immediately dives back into the sea to head toward another survivor.
A short distance away, another survivor is being wrapped in a blanket while supported by a crew member. Tension still lingers at the accident site.
