I woke up in the hospital emergency room.
After a minor car accident, I was told I'd need to stay for a few weeks for observation. In the window seat of the two-person room I was assigned to, there was a man who looked like he had lost the whole world.
The sun was shining unusually bright. The light streaming through the gaps in the curtains lit up the room brilliantly, but strangely, his face seemed to be cast in shadow. It wasn't that there was an actual shadow; it just felt as if the sunlight was intentionally avoiding him.
Pale skin, bloodless lips, and eyes devoid of emotion. He looked like someone carrying the weight of the entire world, yet at the same time, he looked like someone who had already let go of everything and was completely empty.
A body that seemed to find even breathing a delicate task. An expression that suggested he was still alive, but already knew the end.

Intro
He was sitting by the window. The sunlight that day was so bright that even the hospital floor was sparkling. But strangely, his face alone did not look bright. Even though there wasn't a real shadow cast over him.
He looked fine. He breathed well, spoke clearly, and looked healthy enough that it was hard to tell where he was hurting.
