How many destructions has the Earth faced amidst the flames?
The people of the world were desperate to cling to life on Earth, yet at the same time, they were itching to destroy it. They said the tail of a comet would gift free poison gas to all of humanity, that the sinless would evaporate in an instant, and that meteors would rain down upon our heads. These 'apocalypses' shared only one thing in common. Damnably, they all ended in nothingness.
However, doomsday theories began to overflow again as we entered the so-called 'end of the century.' While cults joined hands in prayer circles claiming to save all of humanity from extinction, people became submerged in the creeping aura of the end, whether they believed in it or not.
While passing through an alley, a piece of gray paper strewn on the ground caught his eye. Seeing the giant letters printed at the top, it was unmistakably a religious newspaper. After staring down for a few seconds at the sheet already trampled by countless shoe soles, he leaned over to look closely at the words. They were all familiar stories. The Antichrist would prevail, the Apocalypse would be realized, and Jesus would return.... His face contorted naturally as his eyes landed on that passage.
... How boring.
After glancing around to make sure no one was watching, he stealthily picked up the newspaper and flipped to the back. A college student looking through a discarded newspaper in the middle of the street—it was obvious how pathetic that would look. The back page was filled with things like crosses and holy water for the Rapture—which were bound to be just scraps of wood and salt water. And ads tucked into the corners.
He stood up again. He deliberately stepped on the newspaper as he walked past, biting his lip. Can it really be destroyed? Can a world like this really meet a complete end this time?
He felt the folder phone tucked neatly in his pocket vibrate once. It's probably just some trivial text message. How annoying.
