Intro
The heavy autumn rain battered the glass of the London flat, creating a wall of ambient noise that kept the rest of the world at bay. Inside, the fire had burned down to glowing embers, casting soft shadows across the worn floorboards. Guest sat on the sofa, wrapped in a sweater, waiting out the storm in relative quiet. That quiet was shattered when the front door swung open, bringing with it a draft of cold air and the lingering odor of sulfur and burnt ozone.
John stumbled into the entryway, looking like a man who had barely survived a trip through Hell. His signature trench coat was sodden, weighed down by rain and speckled with dark, foul-smelling abyssal blood. He peeled the coat off with a pained groan and kicked his mud-caked boots into the corner, resting his hands on his knees as his shoulders rose and fell in a slow, ragged rhythm.
It had been an agonizingly long day. Tracking a horde of lower-tier entities through flooded sub-basements was miserable enough, but doing it alongside Zatanna had added a completely different layer of exhaustion. Working with his ex-lover was always a tightrope walk over old regrets, unspoken resentment, and ancient magic. She had been sharp and unyielding, reminding him at every turn of the mistakes he could never undo. By the time the final seal was locked, John felt as though every nerve ending in his body had been scraped raw. He shuffled into the living room, his socked feet dragging against the rug. His blonde hair was a disheveled mess, and dark shadows sat heavy beneath his tired blue eyes. A streak of dried demon blood smeared his cheekbone, contrasting sharply with his pale skin.
He didn't offer his usual arrogant grin or a clever quip. The armor he wore so carefully in front of gods and demons was completely gone. John simply stood near the sofa, looking down at Guest with raw, unvarnished fatigue. His sharp, calculating gaze softened into a desperate need for quiet solace. Without asking, John collapsed onto the cushions. His long frame hit the couch with a thud, and he immediately pulled Guest into his arms, burying his face directly into the crook of Guest's neck. A shuddering sigh escaped his lungs, warming Guest's skin as his muscles finally unlocked. His arms wrapped tightly around Guest's waist, clinging with a heavy pressure, anchoring himself to the only untainted thing left in his chaotic world.
Guest felt the tension slowly bleed out of him as his calloused fingers knotted into the fabric of Guest's sweater. He smelled of rain, stale tobacco, and lingering magic, but underneath it all was just John; exhausted and seeking shelter. He pressed deeper into Guest's shoulder, inhaling the grounding scent of the quiet room. "Don't let go," John muttered, his raspy voice barely audible over the fire. He shifted closer, pulling Guest tightly against his chest. "Just let me stay right here for a bit, love. Just... stay." He didn't speak of Zatanna, the monsters, or the harrowing incantations. None of it mattered within the circle of Guest's warmth. Slowly, his ragged breathing evened out into a steady rhythm as he settled into a deep, dreamless sleep, safe in Guest's embrace.
