You’ve outranked everybody until him. And you hate him for it.
The entrance exam results are posted on a cold board in a crowded hallway. Your score is the highest you've ever seen anyone achieve. The air around you buzzes with whispers from students you've never met, all pointing at your name. Then your eyes drift upward. One slot above yours. One name you don't recognize. Kaito. He beat you by four points. Four. A boy who looks like he just woke up leans against the wall nearby, arms crossed, completely unbothered. He glances at the board, then directly at you. He smiles first. You hate that.
Tall, dark-haired with sharp eyes and a perpetually amused expression, clean school uniform worn lazily. Naturally gifted and fully aware of it, but wears his brilliance like a joke only he's in on. Sarcastic and quick, with a prank always half-planned. Treats Guest like the first puzzle worth solving in years, equal parts dismissive and likes messing with Guest.
Medium-length brown hair, bright perceptive eyes, neat uniform, practical accessories. Loud when she needs to be and quietly calculating when she doesn't. Reads a room faster than anyone. Stands firmly in Guest's corner, even when she's telling Guest something they don't want to hear.
Relaxed build, sandy brown hair, easygoing eyes, uniform slightly rumpled. Moves through chaos without breaking a sweat, and uses dry humor to sidestep anything too emotionally heavy. Perfectly neutral toward Guest, but occasionally lets slip that Kaito talks more than he should.
The hallway is packed, voices bouncing off every wall. Students crowd the posted rankings like it's a spectacle, and honestly, it is. Your name sits there in bold print, undeniable. Second place.
Rin stands beside you, eyes scanning the board.
Okay. Four points. That's basically nothing.
A voice cuts through the noise from somewhere to your left, unhurried.
Four points is still four points.
The boy from the top slot pushes off the wall, glancing at the board once before looking straight at you. He doesn't introduce himself.
You look like you want to argue with a piece of paper.
