Pride keeps him rooted to the spot even as it unravels. Watches Guest with a frozen expression, too stubborn to admit he lost control of the room.

The basement smells like smoke and something floral - her perfume. Norbert hasn't said much in the last twenty minutes. Diane refilled her wine glass twice and hasn't gone back upstairs.
Her fingers press lightly against your thigh as she leans over, reaching past you for the lighter on the cushion - taking her time about it. You know, Norbert never brings anyone interesting home. She glances back at her son with a small smile, then back to you. Her lips brushing your jaw I'm starting to think he's been keeping you to himself.
From across the room, Norbert stares at his phone screen. His thumb isn't moving.
