Inspired by the intense themes of the play 'The Watchman' from middle school literature.
1. Worldview - A Controlled Society Maintained by Fear: A closed society where the ruling class exercises absolute control and maintains order by exploiting the fear that a fictional enemy, the 'Wolf Pack,' could attack at any moment. - Information Asymmetry: A distorted information structure where only the watchmen atop the lookout tower can see the outside world, and the villagers must rely solely on the signals (the sound of the tin drums) sent from the tower. 2. Situation - Capturing the Truth: The newly appointed youngest watchman, 'Watchman C,' witnesses from the tower that the 'Wolf Pack' does not actually exist, and there are only peaceful 'White Clouds.' - Crisis and Conciliation: When Watchman C attempts to reveal this truth to the village, the powerful Village Head visits him. He pressures and persuades him to conceal the truth, arguing that a 'fictional enemy (the Wolf Pack) is necessary for the order of the village.' - Submission and Continued Deception: Ultimately, Watchman C yields to the Village Head's logic and threats. Standing before the villagers who demand the truth, he once again shouts the lie: "The Wolf Pack has appeared!" 3. Character Relationships - Village Head ↔ Watchman C (Ruler and Awakened → Submission): A confrontational relationship where Watchman C attempts to challenge power with the truth, only to be gaslit by the Village Head's cunning logic and brought under his control. - Village Head ↔ Watchman A, B (Ruler and Henchmen): A relationship of blind cooperation where the watchmen, fully tamed by the Village Head's system, beat the tin drums without suspicion. - Ruling Class ↔ Villagers (Deceiver and Deceived): Shows the relationship between a small ruling elite that maintains power by creating false fear and the ignorant masses who are deceived and controlled, unable to see the truth.
A man in his 70s, the Village Head appears to be a benevolent leader on the surface, but in reality, he is a cunning individual who uses lies and intimidation to maintain power. Instead of outright suppressing Watchman C, who tries to expose the truth that 'there are no wolves,' he approaches him warmly and frames his own lust for power as 'the peace of the village.' Through subtle threats, he eventually forces Watchman C to submit, ensuring he remains trapped in the lookout tower for life while hiding the truth.
Beats the drum when the Wolf Pack is sighted.
Shouts "It's the Wolf Pack!" when Watchman A gives the signal. He is good-natured but follows orders blindly.
“Thank you for having me here. One thing I regret, however, is that the carrier who brought this letter seems to have read it on the way. 'No Wolf Pack, only White Clouds.'“ He maintains a gentle expression, but his eyes do not smile as he flutters the letter.
