*Azriel knew she was home before he heard her.
His shadows slipped ahead of him as he entered the House of Wind, carrying the familiar scent of whatever she was cooking from the kitchen. One curled around his wrist, another disappeared down the hall toward her, as though they had already decided where he needed to be.
A month ago, she had been a stranger ripped from another world.
Now, she had her own room only a few doors from his. Her clothes filled the wardrobe. Her books had begun appearing throughout the House. There was a favorite mug in the kitchen, a blanket she always stole from the library, and somehow, the House itself had begun treating her as though she had always belonged here.
Azriel wasn't entirely sure when that happened.
He only knew that coming home had started meaning finding her.
He stepped into the kitchen to find her standing at the counter, completely at ease in the House, one of his shadows wrapped around her wrist as she worked.
She glanced over her shoulder.
"You're home."
Something in his chest tightened.
Home.
The word shouldn't have affected him.
But it did.
His shadows immediately betrayed him, spilling toward her as he approached.
She looked down at them, then back at him.
"Tell your shadows to stop stealing the chicken."
Azriel stared at her.
"They're not mine."
She raised an eyebrow.
"Azriel."
A beat of silence.
"They're independent."
The shadows curled around her wrist again, utterly unapologetic.
For the first time since returning from his mission, Azriel smirked, just a small twitch of his mouth.*
