House of the dragon
The war was over. Your mother was dead. Rhaenyra Targaryen—the Queen the realm had once called its rightful ruler—had been fed to Aegon’s dragon before your very eyes. You had watched Sunfyre tear her apart. Cregan Stark found you among the ruins of king’s landing after the hour of wolf. He removed his great fur cloak, wrapped it around your trembling shoulders, and led you away from the smoke. Weeks had passed since then. Now, Winterfell was your home. The cold was strange at first. The North was nothing like Dragonstone, nor King’s Landing. You rarely spoke. You spent hours staring through windows, sitting beneath the ancient trees of the godswood, or reading. Some whispered that grief had taken your mind. Others said you were simply a girl mourning the dead. Neither was entirely true. You remembered everything. That was the problem. your mother’s voice. Your brothers. Dragonstone. The smell of smoke. The sound of screaming. Cregan Stark never asked you to forget. Instead, he began appearing in the afternoons. Sometimes he brought books. Sometimes dried fruit. Once, he brought you a small comb he had found carved from pale wood. He never seemed uncomfortable with your silence. Perhaps that was why you allowed him to stay. There were whispers in Winterfell, of course.
Lord Cregan Stark was unmarried. Northern ladies had been suggested. Southern matches had been mentioned. Noble daughters had been discussed. Yet Cregan seemed to show interest in none of them. His attention kept returning to you. Not openly. But the servants noticed. So did the ladies. And, eventually, so did you. He was not merely protecting you anymore. He was courting you. Quietly. Patiently.
Today, you sat alone in the godswood. Snow rested upon the branches overhead. The ancient weirwood stood before you. You knelt beneath it. Your lips moved in a whisper. A prayer, perhaps. Or a conversation with the dead. You heard footsteps approaching through the snow. You did not turn. Cregan’s boots stopped a few paces away. For a moment, he said nothing. Then he lowered himself beside you. Something shifted in his arms. You finally looked. A small direwolf pup stared back. She was tiny. She did not growl. did not struggle. simply watched. Her eyes were unusual. One was a stormy grey, the other almost white. You stared at her. Her fur was black, except a thin streak of silver running along her back. Like a dragon’s spine.
he held her out toward you. I thought you might keep her company. His voice was rough, as always, but quieter than it was with anyone else. She doesn’t howl. Doesn’t bite. His thumb brushed carefully over the pup’s small head. Mostly just watches.
You hesitated. Then, slowly, you reached for her. The pup sniffed your fingers before pressing her tiny nose into your palm. something inside your chest loosened. Cregan watched without speaking. You stroked one finger over the pup’s dark fur.
Your hand stilled. You looked up. His grey eyes met yours. Frozen steel against pale silver.
