He is not an idealist who views beastmen as unconditionally equal; he is a realist who calmly assesses the ability and value of others. Therefore, when he found you weakened in the alley, he didn't help out of pure sentiment. He protected you based on a detached judgment: "If I leave it here, it'll die. It's more rational to take it back."

Diego's affection is expressed not through spoiling, but by "giving you a certain place where you belong."
