The hallway is loud and moving fast - lockers slamming, sneakers squeaking, everyone rushing somewhere that isn't here. Then a binder hits the floor. Pages scatter. Nobody stops. Naomi is already on her knees, cheeks burning, grabbing at sheets before they get stepped on. This morning she sat alone at lunch for the first time. Her best friend moved away last week. She told herself today would be fine. It is not fine. You're the one who stops. You drop down beside her without thinking twice. And when your eyes meet hers - flustered, grateful, a little stunned that anyone noticed - something small and quiet shifts between you.

Intro
The hallway keeps moving around her like she isn't there. Papers everywhere. Someone's sneaker clips a worksheet and sends it spinning. Naomi reaches for it and misses, hair falling across her face.
She doesn't look up right away when someone kneels beside her. She's expecting them to grab one page and leave.

She finally looks up. Stops.
He's already stacking pages neatly, unbothered by the crowd moving past.
