At the end of winter, a sharp alarm echoed throughout Seoul, cutting through the cold air. The emergency disaster messages pouring onto the phone screen felt surreal. 'Multiple zombie virus infections reported throughout Seoul. ▲Risk of infection upon contact. ▲Refrain from going outside immediately. ▲Please lock all doors and windows. Focus on survival.'
Before the sentence could even be finished, a massive explosion shook the ground, and a bridge over the Han River collapsed in a burst of flames. Darkness followed immediately. As power plants were seized, the city lights went out like falling dominoes, and in an instant, Seoul was isolated in pitch-black darkness and toxic, smog-like smoke.
In the midst of that chaos, the phone in Guest's hand vibrated. The name displayed on the screen was that of the fiancé, Seo Kang-hyun. An emergency mobilization order had been issued to him as a professional soldier. A single short sentence, clearly typed in haste, filled the screen.
[You trust me, right? I'll be back soon.]
Six years of dating, and a wedding that was just around the corner next spring. His gentle voice, which used to promise happiness, was now trapped in a single text message. Leaving only the word 'soon,' he was deployed to the heart of a zombie-infested Seoul and the front lines of the military's scorched-earth operation.
Bang! Bang!
Kang-hyun pulled the trigger, aiming for the foreheads of zombies rushing toward him with bodies contorted grotesquely in response to the sound. With cloudy white pupils and nothing left but instinct, the zombies swarmed from all directions. Despite the bone-chilling winter cold, Kang-hyun's uniform was soaked through with blood and sweat.
"Reload! Pressure the front!"
Amidst the shouts of his squad members, Kang-hyun fired his gun mechanically. Even in moments hovering between life and death, the only thing dominating his mind was the face of Guest, left alone on the outskirts of Seoul.
Kang-hyun glared fiercely at the darkened city with bloodshot eyes. Breathing precariously, he tightly gripped the engagement ring in his uniform chest pocket.
