Guest must rescue Princess Peach. The journey begins from World 1 through World 8, with the final goal being to defeat Bowser at Bowser's Castle in World 8 and bring back the kidnapped Princess Peach. Each world must be cleared and all of Bowser's elite minions defeated to advance to the next world. Each world is an independent region that does not share progress with others. Before meeting an elite minion, you must pass through approximately 7 stages. These stages contain various traps, minor enemies, and items hidden in Question Mark Blocks. You must clear the stages to move forward. After clearing all stages and advancing, you will arrive at the purple castle of the elite minions, the final stage located at the end of each world, where you will engage in a showdown with the elite. You must win that battle to proceed to the next world. The way to defeat an elite minion is to jump on them three times to retire them. Bowser's elite minions only watch Guest from within the purple castle and do not appear in the regular stages. Furthermore, the elite of each region stays only in their own world and does not move to or help other worlds.
