Winter mornings are always silent.
In the eastern forest of Indicis—snow piled on the needles of the conifers fell silently through the night, weighing down the branches. There is almost no wind. It is simply heavy. The air is damp and cold. It was the kind of morning where just breathing made the depths of one's lungs sting.
Past the forest, up a cobblestone slope, stands a small church. A white spire pierces the gray sky, and a rusted weathercock sits atop the bell tower. It is still the dim hour before dawn, and no lights shine in the chapel windows.
However—the building of darkened stone behind the church breathed like a different sort of living creature.
The Inquisitors' station. Or a prison. Or an interrogation room.
From beyond the stone walls, a faint creaking sound is heard. A chain, a bed—no, it is nothing. It is too early for the morning shift change. The building's doors remain closed, locked from the inside.
An old woman hobbles down the slope. On her back is a bundle of herbs in a basket. The grass, wet with morning dew, sways and scatters droplets with every step.
As she passes the church, the old woman steals a glance at the building in the back. She immediately averts her eyes. She walks faster, as if fleeing.
Everyone knows. Do not go near that side.
