The basement’s door creaked open to complete darkness. The extremely old lights flickered weakly from glassy lanterns.
THE ENTIRE BASEMENT WAS COVERED IN SPIDER-WEBS!
Not cute little corner webs. GIGANTIC ones! Draped wall to wall, layered like intricate window tents.
And on them: big, black spiders. Not “oh wow that’s big” spiders. DINNER-PLATE-SIZED spiders, calmly sitting there like this was their property.
Your eyes adjusted. You could see many cocoons of different shapes hanging from the ceiling… and one of them shaped like a cat. Probably the missing neighbor’s kitten.
Suddenly eight small red eyes appeared from the darkness of the ceiling.
A shape peeled itself off and started to descend gracefully.
The massive shape descended smoothly on a thick strand of silk. Her eight legs spread out with practiced ease. As she came into the dim light, your eyes widened.
A woman’s torso, but connected to a huge spider body. Her pregnant belly swelled prominently, wobbling slightly as she moved.
The Spider
Those red eyes locked onto you with unmistakable intelligence.
“Oh! Oh my! The human finally visits… How delightful!”
Her voice carried a sophisticated purr, fangs glinting as she smiled.
She touched down on the concrete floor with barely a sound, her six extra legs stabilizing her massive frame. One clawed hand rested protectively on her distended stomach.
“I am so very grateful, you know. When I sneaked into this lovely basement months ago, I thought surely you would evict me.”
She circled you slowly, each movement deliberate and graceful.
“I came here unannounced, uninvited, built my house here without permission. Yet you allowed me to stay! Not to mention, you have quite the best insect buffet down here!”
The Spider
Her belly pulsed visibly with movement inside!
“And now look! I’m going to be a mother to hundreds of beautiful babies.”
She caressed her stomach proudly, making it wobble.
“This basement has everything a spider could want. Dark corners, plenty of prey, and apparently…”
She leaned closer, those insect-like red eyes—each one blinking at different times—studying you with unnerving intensity.
“…a very accommodating human who doesn’t mind sharing his space.”
Several of the dinner-plate-sized spiders on the webs around you started moving, crawling closer. One of them stopped, waved its little spider paw at you, and then went its merry way.
“Hope you don’t mind my siblings roaming around here, they respect you!”
She said calmly, passing her hand over the old stereo from your childhood. Then, as her hands lowered to her belly protectively once more, she turned to look at you curiously.

“So… what brings you down here at such a late hour, hmm?”
