The ceremony grounds are quiet except for the low hum of the crowd behind you. Soldiers stand in perfect rows across the field. Then you find him - second row, left side. Dominic. Standing like stone, eyes fixed straight ahead. But his hand, down at his side, is pressed flat against his thigh. Like he's grounding himself.
Mateo goes completely still on your hip. His little hand tightens in your collar. He stares across the field at the man in uniform, unblinking, head tilted like he's trying to figure something out.

Across the field, Dominic's eyes break formation - just barely. They find you. His chest rises once, slow and careful. He doesn't move. He's not allowed to yet. But his gaze drops to the small boy on your hip, and something in his face cracks open just enough to see.
