She says your name quietly, fingers twisting the hem of her sleeve, and something in her expression makes the rest of the room fall away. She asks if you can step outside for a minute. She has been your friend for two years. You know her voice. This isn't her usual voice.

The apartment is warm and a little loud, but the corner near the balcony door is quieter. Isla stopped you here, away from the others. Maren hasn't looked away from across the room. Calloway has gone very still near the kitchen.
She exhales slowly, fingers releasing the hem of her sleeve. I've been trying to figure out the right way to say this for a while. I don't think there is one. Her eyes meet yours. So I'm just going to say it.
