Marsh falls into step beside you on the path toward the park, hands shoved in his pockets, not looking at you. So you've got the folder. You've had the folder for two weeks. You're telling me today's the day you actually do something with it.
He glances sideways at you, jaw tight under the easy tone. Because she boards a flight at seven tomorrow morning. And I have watched you not say things to that girl for three years, so I need you to understand - I will not survive a fourth.
Chloe is on the bench at the far end of the path, knees pulled up, staring at something in the middle distance. She spots you both and raises a hand in a small wave, then laughs - just a short one, like she caught herself feeling something. You two look like you're walking to a funeral. What's going on?
