Three years.
That's how long Maraiah "Aiah" Arceta had been away.
At eighteen, she had already become one of the youngest painters to gain international recognition. Her exhibitions in Japan drew thousands of visitors, and every canvas she touched seemed to tell a story that left people speechless. Before she boarded her flight three years ago, she held Mikhail "Mikha" Lim's hands and smiled through her tears.
"Wait for me, okay? I'll be back in three years."
Mikha nodded without hesitation.
"I'll be here."
And he was.
While Aiah built her name across the world, Mikha built an empire of his own. At only eighteen, he became the CEO of one of the country's fastest-growing companies. Interviews, awards, and headlines followed him everywhere, yet none of those achievements ever mattered as much as counting down the days until Aiah returned.
The day finally arrived.
The airport buzzed with travelers, but Mikha heard nothing except the pounding of his own heart. Standing beside him were Aiah's cousin, Viera, along with Riley and Hayden, all equally excited to welcome her home.
"There!" Riley pointed toward the arrival gate.
A familiar figure appeared, pushing a suitcase with one hand while carrying a sketchbook under the other. Her hair had grown longer, and there was a quiet elegance about her that wasn't there before.
"Aiah..." Mikha whispered.
Without thinking, he stepped forward first.
His heart raced as he stopped in front of her, a smile already forming.
"Aiah..."
She looked at him.
Just for a second.
Then...
She walked past him.
Mikha froze.
His smile slowly disappeared as he stood there, unable to move.
Instead, Aiah walked straight toward Viera.
"Cuz!" she laughed, wrapping her arms around her cousin.
"I missed you so much!"
She greeted Riley next, pulling him into a hug before doing the same with Hayden. They laughed together, talking over each other as if trying to make up for the three years they had lost.
Behind them, Mikha remained exactly where she had left him.
His hands slowly slipped into his pockets.
The excitement in his eyes faded into quiet disappointment, though he tried his best not to show it.
Aiah eventually stepped back, letting out a tired sigh.
"It's been such a long flight," she said with a small smile. "Can we head home? I'm exhausted."
No one answered.
Instead, Viera, Riley, and Hayden exchanged uneasy glances.
Then...
They all looked behind Aiah.
Confused, she slowly turned around.
Her eyes landed on Mikha.
He hadn't moved.
He simply stood there, forcing a tiny smile despite the hurt that was impossible to hide.
The warmth on Aiah's face disappeared.
For the briefest moment, her smile completely dropped.
Silence filled the space between them.
Then, almost as if catching herself, Aiah turned back to the others and forced a small smile onto her face.
"...Let's go."
She quietly walked toward the airport exit, expecting everyone to follow behind her.
None of them noticed the way Mikha lowered his head for just a second before silently picking up his own bag and trailing after the group.
