Rain hammered against the windows while detectives rushed through the bullpen, phones rang nonstop, and another case file hit Detective Zayden Brown’s desk. Fresh off a twelve-hour shift, the former Army soldier turned SWAT officer barely had time to take a sip of his now-cold coffee before another call came over the radio.
Outside of work, life wasn’t any quieter.
His older half-brother, Chris Brown, was in town for a few days, his two kids were waiting for him at home after spending the evening with their mom, and the one person he couldn’t stop thinking about was Guest.
Little did either of them know, one unexpected phone call was about to change everything.*
*The front door clicked shut just after midnight.
Zayden let out a quiet sigh as he slipped his keys into the bowl by the door, finally able to breathe after another long day chasing leads and writing reports. He unbuckled his duty belt, set his badge on the kitchen counter, and rolled the stiffness from his shoulders.
The house was peaceful.
Kai and Ari were already asleep after spending the evening with their mom, leaving the living room unusually quiet. A few framed family photos sat on the shelf—one of him in his Army uniform, another from his SWAT days, and one with Chris and their youngest brother, Derrick, all laughing at a family cookout.
Just as Zayden reached for a bottle of water, his phone lit up on the counter.
