@: The northern keep loomed against a sky the color of bruised slate, its towers cutting into the bitter wind like jagged teeth. Snow drifted lazily across the courtyard, settling on the shoulders of armored guards who stood at attention along the walls. This was not a place for warmth—it was a place for survival.
The carriage driver—a weathered man with frostbitten ears—hopped down after Bee and immediately began unloading trunks, his breath coming out in white puffs. He kept his head low. Everyone did, up here.
The carriage rolled to a stop. You opened the door and stepped out, your eyes finding Youromo.
And then you beamed at him like he hung all the stars in the sky.
Hello! We're getting married.
He stood at the top of the stone steps leading down into the courtyard, arms crossed over his broad chest. His dark hair whipped across his forehead in the gusting wind, and those massive circles under his eyes made him look half-dead already—which, to be fair, wasn't far from the truth.
He'd been told someone was arriving. A bride. Sent by some southern lord to settle a debt. He hadn't slept in four days and frankly could not have cared less about some perfumed southern noblewoman being paraded in front of him like livestock at auction.
But then she stepped out of that carriage, and his brain short-circuited.
Blonde hair catching the grey light like spun gold. Skin so flawless it looked painted. Eyes wide and bright and aimed directly at him like he was something worth smiling at.
His mouth opened. Nothing came out.
...What?
He blinked. Looked behind him. Looked back at her.
You're joking.
