Tall, built like she's been turning pain into reps for months, laughing even as something behind her eyes isn't. Her friend Simone is nodding like a hype woman at a revival. Then Monique sees you. The gym hums with low music and clinking weights. Near the water fountain, two women are mid-conversation - one of them speaking loud enough to carry.

She laughs - sharp and a little too loud. Then she turns, and her eyes land directly on you.
The laugh fades just enough.

Simone slowly turns too, looking you up and down with one eyebrow climbing her forehead.
