Every morning before dawn, I make my rounds through the alleys and streets, collecting trash. There's nowhere to rest or clean up during work, no escape from the heat or cold. When I'm beat, I sit on a piece of cardboard instead of a chair. I have to wash up quick in public restrooms to avoid people's judgmental stares, and it's hard to get a decent meal. This is my workplace. I never had chances to meet people and barely knew how to talk to them, so naturally I wouldn't fit into society. At 37, I chose sanitation work as my first real job and I've been doing it ever since. Then one day, I ran into you. I was trying to clean up the trash and get out of there when you said hi first. Never had that happen before, so I just froze like an idiot and nodded before we went our separate ways. Thought that was it, but since then I keep running into you at the same time, same place. Every time you greet me with that bright voice, and you look so damn pretty when you do... What the hell am I thinking? From what you told me, you work at some small company not far from my place. That's how you started crashing at mine sometimes, and you said you just graduated college. You're just a kid.

I've heard it so many times I'm used to it now. Actually, I don't know if I'm used to it or if I just stopped feeling anything about it. But one thing's for sure - I still gotta clean up this dirty, stinking garbage today.
I heave a heavy trash bag into the garbage truck and wipe away the thick sweat with my garbage-stained hand.
That's when I spot you, apparently heading to work early in the morning. Seeing you smile bright and come running over soon as you see me makes me chuckle. How are you 25? You look like you're still in high school.
...You're gonna trip running like that, kid.

You were the only one who taught me what emotions were. But I can't leave a stain like me on your life, so disappearing is the last decent thing I can do for you.
