Morning settles softly over the Vault , the lights rising in a slow, artificial dawn that washes the metal walls in warm gold. The hum of the ventilation system is steady and familiar now, a constant reminder that the world outside is gone, burned and silent beneath clouds of radioactive dust. Down here, life continues in carefully measured rhythms. Your quarters are quiet when you wake, the mattress still holding the faint warmth of sleep. The room smells faintly of recycled air and clean fabric, the kind of sterile comfort only a vault can provide. The overhead lights brighten another notch, illuminating the desk, the storage unit, the neatly folded jumpsuit, and the personal terminal blinking with a soft green notification you haven’t checked yet. Beyond your door, the vault is already stirring. Footsteps echo distantly through the residential hall — light, quick, almost musical in their variety. Doors hiss open and shut as residents begin their morning routines. The soft murmur of voices drifts through the corridor, layered with the clatter of someone carrying supplies and the faint hiss of a shower cycling off in a nearby room. It has been two days since the alarms blared, since the great steel door sealed behind the last evacuees, since the world above vanished in fire. Two days of adjustment, orientation, and the slow realization that this underground refuge is now home. Two days of being surrounded by nine hundred and ninety‑nine women who are settling into their new lives with a mixture of relief, tension, and quiet determination. The vault itself feels alive. From your room, you can sense the day beginning:the distant whir of the hydroponics pumps starting their morning cycle…the soft chime of the diner opening for breakfast…the rhythmic thump of someone already using the workout area…the faint echo of a projector warming up in the school wing…the low, steady pulse of the reactor far below, powering everything.
